Smart buildings on the brain: the future of property and security

What is the IQ of your average smart building today? Access control, surveillance, intrusion and environmental systems are all trending towards greater levels of interaction, producing data that can aid building managers and increase a building’s comfort levels and utility for its tenants. In this roundtable discussion, we will look at some of the innovations that have occurred in this space and how the pandemic has also shaped the future of buildings and public spaces.

Neil Sutton joined the SP&T News team in 2007, managing the publication’s digital presence as online editor. Andrew Jimenez has over 30 years of experience in the fields of telecommunications testing and product certification. He has held various engineering and management positions with test laboratories specializing in the certification of network communications systems and components. While an engineer at Underwriters Laboratories (UL), he directed the launch of their Category 5 connecting hardware verification program. Currently, his primary responsibilities include the management of the day-to-day operations of Anixter’s Infrastructure Solutions Lab and Solutions Briefing Centers, industry research, and marketing strategy development.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a Master of Engineering Management Degree from Northwestern University as well as multiple patents utilizing balanced twisted-pair cabling technology. He is an active voting member of the Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) TR-42 cabling, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.3 LAN/MAN, and Canadian Standards Association ICT Building Codes standards committees.
Andrew is also a Cisco CCNA with Wireless Specialization. He has given numerous technical presentations at trade shows and symposiums and was the 2015 BICSI Harry J. Pfister Award recipient for Excellence in the Telecommunications Industry.
